Technology Demonstrators Display Call for Participation

The Technology Demonstrators Display is aimed at demonstrating real-world applications that are running live on HPCN Europe, in 1997 this will be in Vienna, Austria (see also www.wins.uva.nl/hpcn/). Typical demonstrators show that HPCN is not just a research topic, but a leading technology with important applications.

The focus on will be on applications collaboration between research institutes and industry, but also other leading-edge applications are welcome. We expect participation typically to come from "vertical chains", collaborations between HPCN knowledge centres, hard and/or software vendors and end-users in industry.

We request proposals for Technology Demonstrators in the following areas:

1 Demonstrators of real working applications. This should be leading-edge applications, the real-life nature of the demonstration should be emphasised. As this easily eclipses the workstation performance, the software and machinery to be used will have to be located elsewhere, preferably in one of the vendor booths at the Exhibition. We expect proposers to contact vendors or a remote computing facility, the TDD organisation, however, can assist in this.

2 Demonstrators of new emerging applications. Here we especially aim at applications in: Data Warehousing, Data Mining, Pattern Recognition, Image Processing as well as innovative applications of the WWW. Here, again, the required high-performance computing and storage equipment should preferably be found at the exhibition grounds.

3 Demonstrators of technology transfer. This is especially aimed at path-finding collaborations with end-users in industry (segments); this comprises introduction of complete new HPCN technology as well as tuning and porting existing software to new HPCN platforms (for new applications). The demonstrations should emphasise the (possible) business benefits of the effort.

Participants are expected to pay a small participation fee.

All proposals will be examined by the independent TDD Steering Board. This board consisting of people from universities, HPCN centres and industry, with a long experience in the HPCN area. Proposals will be judged by there quality. The Board will, however, also try to get a wide variety of applications on the TDD. Proposals should include:
- a title
- name, affiliation, address, e-mail, phone and fax of the contact person
- a short CV of the participating organisations
- a two-page summary of the proposal
- equipment and software used
- support needed

We expect all proposals to assist in the lay-out of an advanced network that will connect machines in the TDD and the Exhibition area, and, eventually, to sites outside the HPCN Europe grounds. Networking technologies could be ATM and Ethernet.

Proposals should be submitted to:
