                              H P C N Europe 1997

The International Conference and Exhibition on
                   High-Performance Computing and Networking

                             Austria Center, Vienna
                               April 28-30, 1997

The Premier Exhibition in the field of Advanced Solutions for Industry,
Research and Education Based on Workstations, Servers, High Performance
Systems, and Networks in Europe.

                           -------------------------
                           The HPCN Europe 1997 Event
                           -------------------------

High Performance Computing and Networking reflects today the dramatic
changes that have taken place in the whole area of general-purpose
computing during the past few years. These changes are being observed
in all domains where high-performance computing is needed including:

Industrial and technical environments, where the trend is a move from
centralised shared systems to more distributed, primarily
application-oriented, servers.

Scientific and academic environments, where the trend is towards
networks of Unix workstations and servers, combined with backup systems
with vector and/or parallel architecture.

Commercial and information management environments, where we see moves
to client-server architectures and to parallel systems if very high
performance levels are required.

These changes are caused by the large improvements in computer
performance, as well as the considerable price reduction of modern
processing and memory, in combination with the increased capabilities
of networking technology. Furthermore, the continuing improvements of
software and associated tools has been an essential stimulus for the
uptake of HPCN in all areas of computing, including the distributed
environments pulled by Internet and WEB developments.

                             ----------------------
                             HPCN Europe 1997 Goals
                             ----------------------

HPCN Europe has been established by experts from academia, industry and
research to provide the most advanced and complete update on High
Performance Computing and Networking technologies in Europe. It is
particularly aimed at individuals involved in top of the range computing
systems, including end-users and developers, but is also relevant to those
with management and purchasing responsibilities in such computing
environments.

The importance of HPCN for the industry, as was early recognized by DG
III of the European Commission via their stimulation program, is
underlined by a special industrial-end user track aimed for industrial
application developers and end-users.

                           --------------------------
                           HPCN Europe 1997 Structure
                           --------------------------

HPCN Europe '97 is a multi-track event, with themes ranging from practical
aspects and end-user experiences to current research on new applications,
algorithms, tools, and systems.

Participants can choose to attend any combination of sessions within
the following tracks:

     T: Technology Demonstrators Display (TDD)

The Technology Demonstrators Display is aimed at demonstrating
real-world applications that are running live on HPCN
Europe. Typical demonstrators show that HPCN is not just a
research topic, but a path-finding technology with important
     applications.

Some of the submitted topics concern:
      - Access to distributed, decentralized, multi-format document
        collections over WWW;
      - A "Collaboratory", a virtual work environment on multiple
        computer systems connected over the Internet;
      - A High-Performance Fortran project
      - Datawarehousing
      - An interactive Satellite Image server
      - Molecular Dynamics applied to paint manufacture

     Optional participants include:
CCLRC Daresbury Laboratory; Emory University; Institute of Computer
      Science; Matra Cap Systemes; Paderborn Centre for Parallel Computing;
      Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center; Swiss Center for Scientific Computing;
      University of Vienna

                    ----------------------------------------
HPCN Europe 97 Focus and Short programme
                    ----------------------------------------

The tracks of the conference are carefully aligned to provide focused
days and/or sessions covering a wide variety of specific application
areas, industrial market segments, and advanced techniques in
Computational and Computer Science. The focused sessions allow
individuals to select specific days with a maximum of information on
the subject(s) of interest. The tracks are aligned in a way that a
session which starts on one track may continue with related issues on a
different track in a timely order.
