ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS
We are proud to announce:
The International Conference and Exhibition on High-Performance Computing
and Networking,
*********************
* HPCN Europe '98 *
*********************
In association with The Internet Working event
******************************************************************************
* April 21-23, 1998 at RAI conference center, in Amsterdam *

The Networking component and associated WEB technology have become
increasingly important for the uptake and development of HPCN.
Therefore it is a pleasure to announce that we were able to let HPCN '98
coincide with a large networking exhibition in Amsterdam.
Like previous years HPCN '98 will focus on Advanced Solutions for Industry,
Research and Education based on Workstations, Servers, High Performance
Systems, and Networks. In particular networking solutions and the
integration of WEB technology will get special attention. HPCN Europe '98
aims to show the importance of HPCN technology for the end-users from
industry as well as from the academic world.
The event will comprise the following activities: a Conference including a
special End-user Session where industrial application play the predominant
role, a Technology Demonstrator Display (TDD), and a number of Workshops.
This is a call for participation and paper submission for the Conference
and Workshops.
The conference will have three complementary HPCN themes:
- end-user applications,
- computational science research
- computer science research
Emphasis will be given to the consequences of using Networking and WEB
technology in these fields.
End-user applications
---------------------------
Like previous years the end-user theme will focus on HPCN end-user
applications in industry and academia. It aims to show the ability of HPCN
technologies to create a competitive edge in science and industry.
The end-user theme in HPCN Europe '98 intends to focus on the following areas:
Applications in Information systems such as:
- Information Highway applications e.g. WEB applications and
architectural issues such as Broadband Networking, caching,
navigation and new visual interfaces.
- Applications in Entertainment and Medical Industry; e.g.
Multi Media, Imaging, Visualisation, Virtual Reality etc.
- Applications in Banking & Insurance; e.g. On-line Transaction
Processing, Financial Modelling, Data Storage & Retrieval and
Warehousing, Data Mining etc.
Applications in Science and Engineering such as:
- Applications in Automotive and Aerospace Industry; e.g.
Mechanical design Analysis for Structured Mechanics, CFD, etc.
- Applications in Consumer Electronics & Telecom; e.g.
Electromagnetic Design for Circuits etc.
- Applications in Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industry; e.g.
Drug Design, Catalysis, Polymer Design etc.
- Applications for Government and Public Agencies; e.g.
Climate Modelling, Environment Simulation for Pollution Studies etc.
Papers on academic research that coincides with the end-user segments
identified above are also solicited, as well as papers concentrating on general
challenging end-user HPCN applications - including those describing HPCN
techniques for new commercial application areas such as transaction
processing and database management. In particular papers describing HPC
applications in Networking environments such as provided by the WEB technology
are very welcome.
Applications combing data-intensive and simulation environments are
specifically asked for.
Computational science research
------------------------------
This theme will concentrate on original research in computational science
and engineering based on HPCN such as new numerical and non-numerical
techniques for parallelization, loadbalancing and scheduling techniques.
Also papers on resource management as well as heterogeneous simulation and
execution environments are solicited. Papers on research into fields such
as High Performance
Databases, Financial Modelling, Pictorial Data Storage and Retrieval, Data
Mining, new methods for Data Visualisation, Computational Steering, and
Complex Dynamical Systems are invited. Papers discussing the combination of
storage and retrieval of large data sets in combination with simulation and
visualisation are in particular welcome.
Computer science research in HPCN
---------------------------------
This conference theme is dedicated towards computer science methods for
HPCN such as tools, runtime support and programming environments, numerical
libraries etc. In this area papers on new research into (parallelization)
tools, programming languages, compilers and programming environments are
solicited. Papers on distributed operating systems issues are also invited.
Papers discussing the specific issues of HPC and Networking as well as the
consequences for WEB technology are solicited.
Paper Submission
----------------
Prospective authors on the above mentioned subjects are invited to submit
a full paper describing their results and experiences related to
High-Performance Computing and Networking in these areas. The material must
be original and not previously published. In selecting papers for inclusion
in the programme, the programme committee will consider the submission's
originality, relevance to the conference, and clarity. Each selected
contributor will be given a 25-minute slot during the conference to present
his or her paper. Papers must
- Be in English; full papers (10 pages maximum) will be accepted for
refereeing.
- Include a title page, which lists the name and mailing address of
each author, and which clearly specifies the presenting author.
- Include the e-mail address, telephone, and fax number of the
corresponding author.
- Include a maximum 150-word abstract.
- In exceptional cases an extended abstract will be accepted.
Papers are submitted without conditions. Authors must obtain approvals
and/or clearances prior to submission. Authors of accepted papers will be
notified of acceptance by February 1 and will be required to sign a
copyright release form.
Contributed papers can be submitted to the Programme Secretariat at the
address given below.
Deadline for Submissions is November 15, 1998.
Instructions for submission see: www.wins.uva.nl/events/HPCN98/
Propose a poster
----------------
Authors preferring a more informal, interactive presentation of their
results may submit a proposal for a poster. Researchers may use the
traditional paper poster formats or provide interactive multimedia
presentations suitable for viewing over the WWW. During scheduled poster
sessions, researchers should be available to discuss their research with
conference attendees. Proposals should include:
- An abstract (150 words or fewer) that describes the content of the
poster.
- Information on the mode of presentation (electronic, video, standard
poster, combination).
- Any equipment and network requirements.
- Name, address, e-mail, phone, and fax information for the presenter.
Poster proposals can be submitted to the Programme Secretariat at the
address given below. Notification of acceptance will be given by February
1.
Deadline for submission is November 15, 1998.
Instructions for submission see: www.wins.uva.nl/events/HPCN98/
Workshops
---------
The following workshops are planned during the conference:
- Genome computing
- HPF
- Virtual reality
- WEB based simulation
- Distributed computing
Papers submissions considering these subjects are solicited.
Paper and Poster Publication
----------------------------
Accepted papers and posters will be published in the conference proceedings
published in Lecture Notes in Computer Science by Springer Verlag. Moreover
a selection of the best papers will be published in a special issue of the
North Holland journal FGCS.
